CURATORIAL STATEMENT

The global pandemic has led to different levels of social distancing measures, national lockdown and travel ban, which made many of us feel lonely and had a feeling of being imprisoned at our own residence. In this regard, windows have become one of the main channels for us to connect with the outside world. It has also become a creative medium that stimulated creativity, inspiration and imagination.

Having been inspired by a series of international artworks and collective art projects, we are focusing on the documentation of reality, inventive sceneries and the surreal creatives for a boundless imaginary experience to conquer the lockdown blues.

The exhibition consists of three interconnecting sections, namely “The Opened Window: Reality”, “The Reflection: Emotion” and “The Unframed Window: Imagination”.

The Opened Window: Reality

Under the widespread of pandemic, all of us have to stay indoor to keep ourselves safe from the invisible infectious disease. As time goes by, we often look out our windows for new sceneries to add colours into the monotonous daily life: watching over the buildings alongside the street, gazing at the passers-by running downstairs until he/she is out of our sight, and more.

At the same time, some artists made use of their cameras and paintbrushes to record everything they have seen and observed through their windows, and shared the captured moments with the public online.

Do tell us, what do you see at this very moment?

Getting tired of the lockdown view from their windows, Sonali Ranjit and Vaishnav Balasubramanian created Window Swap, a collective quarantine project, to call and share global submissions of 10-minute window views to allow everyone to look through someone else’s window, somewhere in the world, for a vicarious travel to fill that deep void in our wanderlust hearts.

The Reflection: Emotion

“Are you alright?” Looking out the window, it is unsure whether it is the cry from my heart or the sound of the surroundings.

By observing the scenery from the outside, the woods, the waves… Can you see it? There seems to be someone standing on the other side. Not sure whether we are looking at him/her, or he/she is looking at us, there is no absolute answer to the question. Instead, why don’t we just open the window, change our mood, keep our heads up and make new memories?

Our life has changed drastically following the outbreak of the epidemic, a “new normal” has emerged and we are forced to adapt swiftly. Apart from this uncontrollable disease, the long-term self-insolation has inevitably impacted our well-being badly. Instead of being devoured by the darkness, we believe it is more important to find ways to ease our worries and anxiety, and take this opportunity to reflect and reexamine the relationships with our neighbours, society, and nature, in search of new meaning and strength in life.

A Picnic On My Velux Series

The quarantine time put us face to this paradox, we are both isolated and universally together. This situation of isolation confronts us with our relationship with the other, with our capacity for adaptation and with social and physical distancing. The window then had an important role in this unique moment. Most of the time, it opens up to the ordinary but sometimes lets you see the extraordinary. My velux as the only opening towards the outside world, as a border towards the social world where we dream of escape.

The Unframed Window: Imagination

“The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless” — Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Philosopher

“Do you wish to let go of everything and embark on a new journey?”

There are no limits for dreams and imagination. Inside the imaginary world of your own, you can see what you think. When you open your eyes again, you might catch a sight of the ridiculous yet familiar world.

Let’s load off our minds, give it a shot to explore the new world.

“Airplane Window” series

“The windows are a continuation of work from a two person show with my wife Tina five years ago. About a year ago I decided to revisit them. The show that Tina and I had together was called “Over Under”. I concentrated on things in the air while she focused on things underwater. I was making pieces with characters sitting in rows together as temporary roommates. While working on those I thought about the window seat, how special it is, how it can be taken for granted, and how the view can put things into perspective.” -Jim Darling

—Jim Darling

“Windows from different places, cities and countries. So where are you from?” -Ellen Sheidlin The artist Ellen put herself inside a transparent house and look out of the window frames, as if she’s being trapped but can still look out from the windows with different angles and perspectives.

」 — Ellen Sheidlin
